CAMRA SUPPORTS COMMUNITY PUBS MONTH

In April, CAMRA, the Campaign for Real Ale is to launch a new national pubs campaign, Community Pubs Month, to champion local pubs which are at the heart of countless communities across Britain.

The aims of Community Pubs Month are to increase footfall in pubs, to encourage more publicans to promote new or existing events to attract further trade, and to spread awareness of community pubs throughout the media.

The dedicated website for the Month – www.communitypubsmonth.org.uk – is geared up to give pubs free publicity through listing any events licensees have planned throughout the month of April. Pubs signing up to the Month will be given free promotional material to help promote their events, whether it be the regular weekly pub quiz or a big one-off charity bash to get the community together.

Tony Jerome, CAMRA Head of Marketing, said:

‘The real aim of this Month is to give a window of opportunity for hard working publicans to promote any events they have planned  in April, and for us at CAMRA to give them all the help and support in terms of publicity and increased trade.

‘We realise it’s a tough time out there for pubs at the moment – as CAMRA’s new pub closure figures highlighted last week – and this is why CAMRA has put a large amount of campaigning funds into this initiative to help pubs market themselves during April.’

Our branch diary page will give details of events in the Wolverhampton area as and when they are organised.

THE WOLVERHAMPTON CASK ALE TRAIL TO TAKE PLACE ON OCTOBER 8TH

To help celebrate the National Cask Ale Week which runs from October 1st to 9th and also to promote its own Ale Trail which is running from October 1st to 16th (see the centre pages of the latest for more details) members of Wolverhampton CAMRA will be undertaking a pub crawl around some of its branch pubs.

Nine of the twelve pubs featured in the newsletter's Ale Trail will be visited on the day. All are more than welcome to join in for all or part of the day and to assist those of you who may wish to catch up with us part of the way around the crawl the full schedule is set out below.

12 noon - Meet at Hog's Head, Stafford St, Wolverhampton City Centre
12:50 - Stile, Fawdry St, Whitmore Reans
13:45 - Summer House, Newhampton Rd East, Whitmore Reans
14:30 - Royal Oak, Compton Rd, Chapel Ash
15:00 - Combermere Arms, Tettenhall Road, Chapel Ash
15:45 - Golden Glassy, Zoar St, Merridale
17:00 - Vine, Lichfield Rd, Wednesfield

19:30 - Horse & Jockey, Robert Wynd, Woodcross

That ends the crawl, however as the Horse & Jockey is only a 10 minute walk up to the Beacon Hotel in Sedgley I'm sure that anyone still standing will opt to finish the night at the West Midlands pub of the year! It's recommended that you purchase an nbus day ticket for £3.80. Most routes are operated by National Express West Midlands however the 545 from Bilston to Woodcross is operated by Diamond.

BEERWOLF - THE MOST IMPROVED NEWSLETTER OF THE YEAR

CONGRATULATIONS!

At the West Midlands Regional Presentation at the Barton Arms at Christmas,

John Dearnaley was presented with the most improved newsletter of the year award.

John was a worthy winner. What a development from the black and white copy of the relaunched Beerwolf at the end of 2009, produced jointly with Andy Parton, to the 40 page full colour glossy of the latest production. Very well deserved!

However, just before the presentation, at the December branch meeting, John stunned members into silence by announcing that he was handing in his resignation as editor. He explained that the effort of taking on the whole production of arranging articles, sourcing adverts, producing the layout for printing, organising distribution, etc. was taking too much of his time, even with substantial help from Jo. No amount of pleading could persuade him to change his mind. Thanks John for a wonderful effort. You can be proud of what you have created and have certainly made it difficult for those that follow.

WOLVERHAMPTON CAMRA ANNOUNCES 2011 PUBS OF THE YEAR.

NEW FIRST TIME WINNER!

The Wolverhampton branch of the Campaign for Real Ale, CAMRA, has announced the 2011 winners of its annual Pub of the Year competition.

Taking the City Pub of the Year title for the first time is the Hog’s Head. Manager, Jonathan Jenkins, commented that the award followed the increasing popularity of real ale, particularly noticeable amongst younger customers.

The Swan Hotel, Brewood, has retained the Country Pub of the Year title they won last year. Licencees Rob and Steph Burns expressed their delight saying the award shows that there is still a requirement for traditional community pubs serving good beer without further gimmicks.
